Legend has it that when Jimi Hendrix was once asked what it was like to be the best guitarist in the world, he replied, “I don’t know, ask Phil Keaggy.” This story always seemed a little dubious, not because of Keaggy’s talent, which he has a lot, but I always wondered Hendrix would’ve ever heard of someone like Keaggy who would’ve just been starting his career as a little known guitarist in the world of Christian music just as Hendrix would’ve been nearing the end of his life. Fortunately, this is the information age and we have sites like The Smoking Gun and Snopes.com which were set up to shine a light on these myths. If you want see the full story, you can check it out here.

Yes, I know Silverson Pickups completely ripped off their sound from Smashing Pumpkins. It seems to be pointed out every time that the band is mentioned. It’s almost like an apology for playing them. Now, I’m not going to deny that but with the success of songs like Lazy Eye and Panic Switch, maybe it’s time to give them a bit of credit. They’re back with a new album, Neck of the Woods and while it doesn’t have anything as immediately accessible as the aforementioned singles, it shows the band experimenting a lot more. Not necessarily with their standard guitar sounds, but a lot more with rhythms and not really loading it with formulaic, radio friendly songs. I’m a little disappointed with it as I always enjoyed the radio singles but maybe I just need to give this album a little more time to sink in and digest.

Emo means a lot of things to a lot of people. To some, it’s the outsider sitting in the corner and crying. To other, it’s a form of music that allows you to get through some really emotional times as a teenager. I’m not sure where exactly I fall on the scale but I’ve definitely listened to my share of it. Is Thing Thing On? recently counted down their Top 100 Emo Songs of All Time. I saw a lot of bands there that brought back a lot of memories. I spent a fair bit of time listening to Further Seems Forever, Brandtson, The Get Up Kids, Sunny Day Real Estate, The Appleseed Cast and Mineral. I didn’t really agree with their #1 overall, but they mentioned a lot of great tracks. I’m not sure what my list would look like but it would contain some of the following; Forever Longing The Golden Sunsets and Steps and Numbers by The Appleseed Cast, Valentine by The Get Up Kids, Snowbirds and Townies by Further Seems Forever and How It Feels To Be Something On by Sunny Day Real Estate. I put a quick set together for you if none of those bands sound familiar. Here’s what I’ve got lined up for you this week:

Thousand Foot Krutch – Light Up The Sky from “The End Is Where We Begin”

Matisyahu – Sunshine
Lecrae – Church Clothes
Deepspace 5 – From The Outside from “The Future Ain’t What It Used To Be”

Spritiualized – Little Girl from “Sweet Heart Sweet Light”
The Choir – Strange Girl from “The Loudest Sound Ever Heard”
The Elwins – Countdown

The Appleseed Cast – Forever Longing The Golden Sunsets from “Mare Vitalis”
Sunny Day Real Estate – In Circles from “Diary”
Mineral – &Serenading from “EndSerenading”

Sleep For Sleepers – Heaven from “The Younger Years”

Thanks for listening and I’ll see you next week.

Bruce Springsteen has never had a #1 song. Read that again. I didn’t really believe it the first time that I read it. I know what you’re thinking, “Surely, someone as influential and iconic as him has had a #1 single?” No, he hasn’t and don’t call me Shirley… (Sorry, I couldn’t help myself) Springsteen’s closest to the top of the charts was Dancing In The Dark, which made it all the way to #2. You remember the video where he pulls Courtney Cox on stage to dance with him. Despite that kind of success eluding him, The Boss has still been influential. About 2 or 3 years ago, it started to become really popular in indie circles to be a big fan of Springsteen and have him be the main influence in your sound, kind of like what happened to Johnny Cash when the American Recordings came out. The Gaslight Anthem were really the first to make waves, but there’s really starting to be a sub-genre developing here. I saw someone from one of my local record stores dub it Brucecore on Twitter and I can’t really disagree. So you’re getting some Brucecore this week and all this:

mewithoutYou – Fox’s Dream of the Log Fume from “Ten Stories”

The Gaslight Anthem – Blue Jeans & White T-Shirts from “Senor & The Queen”
Mike Dunn & the Kings of New England – Sundowner from “Sundowner”

I really didn’t expect to feature any rap on the show this week. After last week’s tribute to L.A. Symphony, I thought I’d head back to the indie rock and I know and love. Then I got three fantastic new tracks this week. Firstly, Chali 2na released a new single online to his mailing list. I love his voice and aside from Cut Chemist, probably the most recognizable member of Jurassic 5. The track’s pretty good and I’m glad that he’s still making music. After that, friend of the show Dalton pointed me to a new track from Colin Munroe and The Runaway dropped a new EP as well. Given this and the fact that I finally got around to downloading the Pale Blue Dot EP from Mr. J. Medeiros and I had to put this all in. Believe me there’s a lot of great music that’s not rap in the episode today, but it’s just what gets featured off the top.

Dustin Kensrue – John The Revelator (Download it here.)

Chali 2na – Against The Current
Colin Munroe – Invincible featuring RZA & Memoryhouse (Download it here.)
Mr. J. Medeiros – Pale Blue Dot featuring Giannina Ashe from “Pale Blue Dot” (Download it here.)
The Runaway – Time After Time featuring Caroline Brooks of The Good Lovelies from “Inspired” (Download it here.)

This episode was really a long time in coming. From time to time, I’ll dedicate an episode specifically to one artist, telling their story and giving you a snapshot of their music and talk a little more in depth about their careers. It’s been a while but when I heard that LA Symphony were re-uniting as part of the Paid Dues festival last weekend, I knew that I had to feature some of their music. They’ve had a lot of members come and go over the years and after the group disbanded, there have been a large number of projects to come from the individual members. Pigeon John, Poems, Cookbook, UNO Mas, the list of people goes on and on. (For a complete list, see the Wikipedia article) I gave a bit of a history lesson in the episode, so I’ll leave you with the setlist for today:

Rootbeer – La Californie (demo)

L.A. Symphony – San Diego from “Composition #1″
L.A. Symphony – L.A. from “Call It What You Want”

Part of the fun of putting this podcast together is hearing a song that I want to feature and then connecting it with some older stuff that would fit well with it. I came across an EP this week by a band called Least of These. The EP has been out for a while and they’re just prepping for the release of their first full length. As a result, they’re giving the EP away for free. You can grab it here. Listening to this made me jump back into some other releases like Thrice, So Long Forgotten and Tallhart. I played with pairing a few songs with The Call and wound up choosing a Tallhart song. The same thing goes for the Vinyl Thief song. I wasn’t planning on a using an Arcade Fire song but listening to Faces just made start thinking of Month of May, so I had to use it. Here’s what you’re hearing this week:

Joel Plaskett Emergency – You’re Mine from “Scrappy Happiness”

Least of These – The Call from “More Than Conquerors”
Tallhart – Sister Of Mine from “Sister Of Mine”
Vinyl Thief – Faces from “Rebel Hill”
Arcade Fire – Month Of May from “The Suburbs”

Ane Brun – Neighbourhood #1
Dreamend – Winter Wheat from “And the Tears Washed Me, Wave After Cowardly Wave”
Woodpigeon – Chelsea Hotel #2 from “The Bard of Montreal” (Download it here.)

New Terrors – Teething Troubles from “Mother”

Thanks for listening and I’ll see you next week.

I was going to write a nice intro piece about The Welcome Wagon and intentionally not mention Sufjan Stevens but I couldn’t do it. Vito Aiuto has been a friend of Sufjan for a long time. Even before Asthmatic Kitty put out Welcome To The Welcome Wagon, Vito’s name and voice were out there. Sufjan wrote a song about the day he became an ordained minister (Vito’s Ordination Song from Michigan) and got Vito to lend his voice on some of Sufjan’s Christmas recordings. If you listened to Welcome To The Welcome Wagon, at times you’d swear that you were listening to a Sufjan album in the vein of Michigan and Seven Swans. Even the voice on the album was very reminiscent of Sufjan. I enjoyed that album immensely and was pretty excited when I saw a track pop up from their upcoming album (Precious Remedies Against Satan’s Devices, due June 12th) this week. It seems like this is a great step forward for Vito and his wife. The song still has that folk-country vibe that permeated the first disc but the voice sounds a lot more distinct and hopefully we can start talking about them on their own and no longer in the context and shadow of Mr. Stevens, who has gone a long ways from his quieter, folkier side.

Ask most people who originally recorded I Fought The Law and you’ll probably get a variety of answers. The most common one is probably The Clash but that’s not true. They definitely brought it to the punk generation where it’s become one of the most covered songs, but they didn’t write it. Credit goes instead to the Bobby Fuller Four. That may not sound too familiar to you, but if I mention that they were originally Buddy Holly’s backing band, at least until his untimely death. Hopefully that helps you to place them. If not, go out and listen to some Buddy Holly, you won’t be disappointed.

The record label Tooth & Nail Records might not mean anything to you, but in my formative high school years, they were my go-to choice for new music. Because of all the great releases that they produced, the name of the label often meant for to me than the name of the band that I was checking out. They released edgy albums from hardcore and punk to math rock to the unbelievably quirky art-rock of the Danielson Famile. For being a small independent label out of Seattle that relied a lot of mail order and Christian Book Stores to sell CD’s, they made too much money that they eventually attracted the attention of major label EMI. As technology began to improve, the records started sounding more and more produced. The new bands that joined the label seemed to specifically target demographics and the sounds got poppier and poppier. The old bands like MxPx, Stavesacre, Starflyer 59 and Joy Electric eventually disappeared from their roster. Now there’s really nothing I recognize anymore. Anyways, today’s lead track comes courtesy of the label and it’s evidence of this new sound and direction. That’s not to say it’s a bad track, I like it. I think I’m now out of the target demographic of most of their releases. So enjoy:
