Barring any unforeseen happenstances, one of our longest-suffering content providers will be uploading his 100th podcast today, and we couldn’t be happier. Jared’s awesome selection of tunes has kept us all going over the years (has it been years?) and we just wanted to say “Thank you”.

It turns out we weren’t the only ones. I can’t even describe how surprised we were to learn that quite a few notable celebrities have been following the show, and they wanted to say thanks too.

Thanks Jared, for ensuring that SilentTalkie didn’t just fall off the map. You’re the man, and see you in the car.

Feel free to leave a comment sharing how the MEH podcast has changed your life.

I’m busy so here this is. I also had to fight stuff, so there’s that. I still got a show done so those giving me hastles can just enjoy the show and stop giving me hastles. I hate getting hastled because I take it personally. I’m a bit of a suck like that.

But here’s a really random and crazy show, which I need to listen to as much as anyone.

Oh the weather outside is weather…

Today’s selection of music was brought to you by some other listeners (Thanks Kerry, Melissa and Sal) and also by random, the weather and nostalgia.
Spread the word and get some more requests in, not just to give me a break but also because I’m always looking for new music. Honestly, everyone should be looking for new music because really, it’s awesome.

It’s hard to believe another month has passed, but sure enough today is the last day of July. My inbox was once again brimming with promos this month and as always, it’s really hard to choose which ones to play on the show.

I get lots of music sent to me, ranging from downtempo to house & progressive, but because of Progressive Aggressive’s 1 hour set format I have to find a chunk of tracks that work together in that way. I’ve considered moving toward a more radio-based format where songs are broken up by chatter and IDs with maybe a 3 or 4 track set in there somewhere. That would, of course, require a little more effort on my part and I don’t really want to go down that road unless the people who listen to PA are in favour.

Please drop me a line and let me know what you’d think about shaking up the format of the show.

Anyhow, this month’s show kicks off with a great track by Schodt featuring vocalist Aida Fenhel on Silk Digital. There is a stellar remix package on this EP as well – I Highly recommend any of you trance & progressive lovers out there pick this one up.

Also in this edition of Progressive Aggressive, Some great tracks from the Nellie Recordings Imprint. Swedish duo ‘Something Good’ have followed up their highly successful Solence EP with another two track release. There are also a couple of nice ones from the Nellie Remixed Vol. 2 that I’ve featured in this mix as well.

On the production side of things, if you were wondering when my forthcoming Spark / Aura release on Silk Digital might be out, you may have to wait until November… Sad face. Things have been a little quiet for me in terms of studio output. It has been a crazy busy spring & summer so far, but there are some new and exciting projects in the works! I’ll save that for another post. I’m also working on pulling together a new website – this one is looking a little tired

Hope you enjoy the mix!

Tracklisting:
01. Schodt feat. Aida Fenhel – White Tiger (Vocal Mix)
02. BT – Forget Me (Michael Cassette Remix)
03. The One Hundred – Break Me Down (Bellatrax Remix)

We’ve brought in David Akermanis to host a monthly podcast that will blow your socks off. It’s unlike anything we’ve had on ST before, but I’m sure it’s the start of things to come. His first show is already available, so check him out and spread the word.

Also, if you’re interested in getting involved with a podcast or writing articles, let us know and we’ll get you on board too. It’s a big train and there’s plenty of room. Toot toot!

From the release of his new album “Working on a Dream,” the biggest performance of his career at this year’s Superbowl, performing at Barack Obama’s inauguartion weekend and winning a Golden Globe for his contribution to the soundtrack of “The Wrestler,” Bruce Springsteen’s career has returned to an all-time high. And as a long-time Bruce Springsteen fan, I couldn’t be happier… it’s a far cry from the days of “Ghost of Tom Joad.” So in honour of the new “Golden Age” of Springsteen’s career, I’ve taken a look at some of the new generation of Springsteen-inspired artists, who I think that a deep vein of Boss-inspired musicality and lyricism. In the second half of the podcast, I’ll share some more obscure Springsteen covers

This is by no means a definitive sampling of bands and artists influenced by the Boss… off the top of my head I would also include the “Sam’s Town” era of the Killers, Dan Boeckner from Wolf Parade…

1. “July 4, 2004″ by Jason Anderson from “The Hopeful and the Unafraid”

Oh Jason are you still waiting? If they need to replace Springsteen someday, Anderson could fill his role easily. Anderson bounds with energy and fosters group scream-a-longs and oozes anthems. I confess that I need to listen to more of his material, but I have worn out the grooves on this vinyl-only release.

2. “Meet Me By the River’s Edge” by Gaslight Anthem from “The ’59 Sound”

I first heard the Gaslight Anthem while on a road trip with Jared across New York State (actually traveling home from Karim’s house), and I was pretty underwhelmed. However, there was something about the band that made me want to give them a listen, and eventually “The ’59 Sound” won me over. As a New Jersey band, the Springsteen influence is obvious, and the singer Brian Fallon even tosses in a Springsteen-esque croon at the end of this song. I chose this song in particular because Fallon references Springsteen directly, building a new song out of the Boss anthem, “No Surrender.”

3. “(Antichrist Television Blues)” by Arcade Fire from “Neon Bible”

I first noticed the Springsteen influence in Win Butler’s writing emerge on “Neon Bible,” particularly in this song and “Intervention.” While guys like Jason Anderson and Brian Fallon nail Springsteen’s storytelling strengths, Butler picks up on his “power-to-the-people” message… no wonder these guys were invited to perform at a private party at the White House.

4. “I Will Not Sing a Hateful Song” by the Constantines from “Kensington Heights”

Now for this band from Guelph, Ontario, they nail Springsteen’s “everyman” vibe… and being a very grassroots Canadian bunch, it comes naturally. Back when the Cons were doing small clubs, the sax was also a bigger part of their live show and also drew some heavy Springsteen comparisons.

5. “Thunder Road” by Bonnie “Prince” Billy + Tortoise from “The Brave and the Bold”

The first cover up is from the collaboration album between Will Oldham and Tortoise, which was released a few years back. I think the keyboards that pop up right at the start of this track will probably divide listeners: if you hate them, you won’t like the song, but if you love them, then I know you’ll love this song.

6. “Badlands” by The Blankket from “Be Your Own Boss”

I’ll let Toronto’s Steve Kado (who was doing bass-guitar only performances of this material around the time of its recording) explain his four-song EP that this track was taken from (taken from his website). “Audio recording of four songs originally performed and written by Bruce Springsteen. Uncanny new arrangements: more critical emphasis on the role of capital on human relationships, both to each other and to ourselves. Can we dream? Are we anything without a system of exchange mediating every action and encounter? ”

7. “Streets of Philadelphia” by Casiotone for the Painfully Alone w/ Concern from “Advance Base Battery Life”

I just came across this cover as I was putting the podcast together, and I think the most surprising thing about this one, is how similar it is to the original song by Bruce. Lots of keyboards, drum machines, eerie vocals…. very familiar, at least in concept.

8. “Blinded by the Light” by Manfred Mann’s Earth Band from “The Roaring Silence”

Finally, I know that most people are going to absolutely hate this last cover, but as I mention in the podcast, it’s a whimsical, free-flowing take on a song that at it’s core, is whimsical and free-flowing itself. And on a sad note, it’s the only Springsteen song that ever went to number one.

Thanks again for tuning in, and I hope you have a great week!

SilentTalkie version 5.893 has been a roaring success and is continuing it’s evolution everyday. STRadio has been as huge of a success as we knew it would be and damn it, we’re proud of that! Our other stories continue unabated and if you ever need something good to read, we’re there for you.

It may seem that I’m overly confident or as they say in sports “cocky” but to that I say, “NO SIR or MA’AM or MIR!” I have finally come to the realization that once a story, article or radio show is published, it’s a winner. A) something was created and 2) you’ve decided to share that creation. This takes a certain amount of balls, chutzpah, or cojones depending on your persuasion.

Now, to all the haters wondering when we are going to fail, wondering what our stats are or wondering when we’re going to resort to posting the exploits of Branjalinaanistaflemcconarooney (that last one was just gross, as I’m talking about Mickey), I say “Never… or possibly in months… or weeks… but not for the near future.”

ST is just too much fun for us and eventually everyone else will catch on. As well, new features such as advertisements, aren’t just for making money. Have you actually looked at them? THEY ARE GOLD, LITERALLY! Golden honey, couches, and silent machinery!? Nobody could write that stuff! Not even Cormac McCarthy or some other hot comedy writer… Google is funny as hell!

So as always, thanks for reading and tell your friends.

We love you and hold you in the highest regard to all of our parents and even our Omas.

Hey dorks…

Sorry. I’m just a bit tired and I can’t shake this cold. Stupid weather. Yes, that’s right, I’m talking about the weather because it’s crushing me. Stone cold crushing, bra. See? WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?!?

I gotta get out of this funk. You’d think after my spiritual retreat and getting my sight back, I’d be motivated… and I am! Somethings gotta change. This is my new manifesto before all four of you readers. I’m going to make a change. It’s up to me, to change my life and I’m going to do it. Here I go! Ready?

And….

Pfft…screw it. The status quo is much easier. Apathy is king.

Speaking of apathy, this issue is a little light eh? I’m gonna have to get those lazy writers to post more. It’s handy to be a squid when there’s whipping to be done.

The quantity might be low, but the quality, as always is glorious.

Enjoy.

Tim
