Hear ye, hear ye! Thar be a BCOL!

On the podcast today, I’ve played a song by a friend’s band The Hooby. Check them out here for more awesomeness: http://thehooby.com/

Today’s show also has a little production involved. A theme song in the form of the beginning to the Minders’ “Hooray for Tuesday”. This is first and foremost and awesome song. And also, hooray just happens to be one of my favourite words. Ever.

Let me know if it works and I’ll drop it if it doesn’t. I think it’s ok… but I’m a bit like a sheep.

Tomorrow I’ll be taping a spot on the CBC Radio 3 show, the R3:30. I’m really freakin’ pumped.

But this setlist shows some promise as well.

The future sucks.

Well, the future in the form of iTunes crashing again and robbing me of my music sucks. So today, we go back… IN TIME!!!

The Brown Couch of Leisure started out as a radioshow on the now defunct college and community station CKMS in Waterloo. The original show was on Thursday at noon or something called Brunch with Karim, then moved to afternoons on Wendesdays for the Soft Rock Radio Show and finally, BCOL on Tuesdays from 2:30 – 5pm was born.

It was wonderful. Requests, people dropping by into the studio, a nice microphone or two… amazing… But I had to move to Toronto and that was that.

Now, I’m digging through the archives for some old copies of the log which I have on .mp3. I’ll start adding a few shows here and there to keep things interesting.

Today? Part 1 of October 21, 2003. Hilarious but wow, the music is still awesome! Don’t call in for requests but you can email me at karimawad@gmail.com or tweet at me @karimawad if you have anything you’d like to hear.

I have no track list…

I’m busy so here this is. I also had to fight stuff, so there’s that. I still got a show done so those giving me hastles can just enjoy the show and stop giving me hastles. I hate getting hastled because I take it personally. I’m a bit of a suck like that.

But here’s a really random and crazy show, which I need to listen to as much as anyone.

Starts with a “Blargh”…

Hot Panda – Pools – How Come I’m Dead

Belle & Sebastian – I’m Not Living In The Real World – Write About Love
Sondre Lerche – If Only – Heartbeat Radio
The Silent League – Yours Truly 2095 – … But You’ve Always Been the Caretaker
Telekinesis! – Tokyo – Telekinesis!
Givers – Ceiling of Plankton – Givers EP

Alcoholic Faith Mission – Closer to Dallas – Let This Be the Last Night We Care
The Silver Jews – Random Rules – American Water
The Good, The Bad & The Queen – Herculean – The Good, The Bad & The Queen
Caledonia – The Plague – We Are America
Library Voices – Haunt This House - Denim On Denim

The Sound of Arrows – Winding Roads - Danger!
Sleigh Bells – Riot Rhythm – Treats
Four Tet – Hands – Rounds
Datarock – Princess - Datarock
Yeasayer – O.N.E. – Odd Blood

Stereolab – Miss Modular - Dots & Loops

Ends in a “w00t!”

No excuses… None. I missed another show. I don’t have to explain myself at all. Nope, not doing to do it.

I will say that time is fleeting and running and flowing and streaming very very quickly these days. It is completely relative, but I hate it. I have a lot going on right now, but nothing that I’m striving to get to in a hurry. I’m not some little kid waiting for their birthday or Christmas and wishing they could just skip ahead days or weeks. But skip ahead it does.

That’s all I have to say.

I don’t even think the above has anything to do with music, but there it is. Does this setlist ground you in a certain time or place? Nope… not all, but here it is.

Hey Time, chill bro…

Schwab – The Mole Man

Belle and Sebastian – Come On Sister – Write About Love
Spearmint – The Flaming Lips – A Different Lifetime
My Little Pony – Skipping Down the Street – Think Too Much
Camera Obscura – Number One Son – Underachievers Please Try Harder
The Gentle Waves – Flood – Swansong For You

Zeus – You Gotta Tell’er – Say Us
The Walkmen – Angela Surf City – Angela Surf City
Hot Hot Heat – Goddess On The Prairie - Future Breeds
Moondoggies – Tidelands – Tidelands
Julian Casablancas – Tourist - Phrazes for the Young

The Broken Family Band – Salivating – Please And Thank You
Names of Stars – Middle of the Night – Names of Stars
The Ghost is Dancing – Stick Together - Battles On
The Dandy Warhols – You Were The Last High – Welcome To The Monkey House
The Apples in Stereo – Allright / Not Quite – The Discovery of a World Inside the Moone

The Brian Jonestown Massacre – Dawn – Strung Out In Heaven

The songs chosen for today’s show are great. That’s nothing new. However, when I look at the playlist, it includes bands that I really don’t know that well or that I know very few songs of.

Weird.

Used to be a time when I would devour a new album and listen and listen and listen and listen and listen and read up on and listen. Now? Can’t do it… Too much music. Too much stuff on the go and frankly, not enough time. I blame the internet and the year 2000. I lost focus after the old millennium was done. But also? The internet has deluged me with music. It’s a good thing and I have a lot of love to spread around to new bands and new music, but I don’t have that devotion that I used to have.

All of this is pointless because this setlist is awesome. Enjoy.

The Mountain Goats – Riches and Wonders – All Hail West Texas

Richard Hell & The Voidoids – Blank Generation – Blank Generation
The Feelies – Raised Eyebrows - Crazy Rhythms
White Rabbits – While We Go Dancing – Fort Nightly
Field Music – Effortlessly – Measure
The Walkmen – The Rat – Bows and Arrows

The School – Valentine – Loveless Unbeliever
Magic Kids – Summer – Memphis
Library Voices – Bookish – Denim on Denim
The Field Mice – Coach Station Reunion – For Keeps
Math and Physics Club – You’re So Good To Me – Movie Ending Romance

Oh the weather outside is weather…

Today’s selection of music was brought to you by some other listeners (Thanks Kerry, Melissa and Sal) and also by random, the weather and nostalgia. These elements put together a pretty great show today. Plus also, less work for me. Which is great. Cause I’m a busy and important person. To myself.

Spread the word and get some more requests in, not just to give me a break but also because I’m always looking for new music. Honestly, everyone should be looking for new music because really, it’s awesome.

And to that, I say…. setlist.

Wow… it’s been a long time!

But live and stuff and whatever… that’s not what you want to hear. You want music! Also, here’s some complaining about iTunes 10. It sucks. Trying to rebuild my library of music is taking a long long long long long time. So most of the songs today are from A-C in the ol’ library with a few bonus, poorly named albums put in!

As well, the last song is NSFW… it has a lot of swearing but if you don’t mind the F* word it is amazing… F’n amazing. It’s so good, it doesn’t sound like swearing at all.

You can see the awesome videos for the NSFW song – HERE is the text version and HERE is the actoring version … so worth it!

Enjoy Kids… it’s good to be home.

A.C. Newman – There Are Maybe Ten or Twelve – Get Guilty

Belle and Sebastian – Write About Love – Write About Love
Beulah – A Good Man Is Easy To Kill – The Coast Is Never Clear
The Posies – I May Hate You Sometimes – Children Of Nuggets
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Over and Over Again – Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Built To Spill – Conventional Wisdom – You In Reverse

Alec Ounsworth – Me and You, Watson – Mo Beauty
Dent May and His Magnificent Ukulele – Howard

Oh man, oh my…
I’ve been away for a while. It’s good to be back, but this last month was a portent (heck yes) of things to come. It’s been a crazy time in my life with weekly trips to Toronto, moving, graduations, work, and a little something called the WORLD CUP! I’ve been getting a lot of work done, but also watching all the matches. And I couldn’t be happier.

Vuvuzelas, those horns a lot of fans are blowing, are causing quite a stir. They sound like a drone of angry bees and have been mocked, ridiculed and spat upon all over. Calls to ban them have been silenced and to that I say, fantastic. I don’t like the sound. It’s annoying and takes away from other crowd sounds I appreciate, like chanting, singing etc. However, they have been a tradition in South African Football for years and this isn’t a surprise to the FIFA team. Plus, if you listen long enough, you just get used to them! Tradition wins out and for that, hurrah!

But this is about music, and here is an awesome setlist. Enjoy…

</vuvuzela>

Wild Moccasins – It’s Health & My Own – Skin Collision Past

Sufjan Stevens – He Woke Me Up Again – Seven Swans
Blitzen Trapper – Love and Hate – Destroyer of the Void
Maps & Atlases – Solid Ground – Solid Ground
The Tallest Man on Earth – Burden Of Tomorrow – The Wild Hunt
