It’s always fun to venture back through your music collection and stumble upon an album that you didn’t listen to much when you first got it, but then once you hear it again, you get it and really enjoy it. This happens once in a while, most notably in my life with Further Seems Forever’s The Moon Is Down and anything by The Danielson Famile. It happened to me this week with Okkervil River. I had come across their Stage Names album in my collection and decided to give it a spin. I’m thankful I did. The track Plus Ones jumped out at me and I knew that I had to include it this week. Here’s what else you’re listening to:

Craig’s Brother – The Mistake Of Caring

The Sadies – Another Year Again from “Darker Circles”
Mike Ness – I Fought The Law from “Under The Influences Vol. 1″
Metric – Gimme Sympathy from their session for Daytrotter.com

Okkervil River – Plus Ones from “The Stage Names”
The Temper Trap – Sweet Disposition from “Conditions”
The Love Language – Pedals from “Libraries”

The Lassie Foundation – El Rey from “El Rey”

Thanks for listening and I’ll see you next week.

Today’s podcast was put together with a little bit of a heavy heart. I spent sometime yesterday watching the Germans be bounced by the Spanish in the World Cup. I was pretty confused as to why the Germans decided just to sit back, concede most of the possession and only take a couple counter attacks. It seemed like a pretty odd decision from a team that dominated early in the tournament by playing a pretty free flowing attacking system. Oh well, I guess there’s always 2014, but I’m still holding out hope to be cheering for a Canadian team then. This is what you’re listening to this week:

The National – Terrible Love from “High Violet”

Five Iron Frenzy – It’s So Hot, I’m Gonna Have a Heat Stroke from “Cheeses of Nazareth”
YourFace – The Slurpee Song from “Trust Me”
The Inklings – Slurpee from “I’m Your Biggest Fan Vol. 1″

Joey Cape – The Ramones Are Dead
Denison Witmer – The 80’s from “Of Joy And Sorrow”
The Radical Dudez – Ukelele from “The Radical Dudez”
The Gaslight Anthem – Boxer from “American Slang”
Arkells – Heart of the City from “Jackson Square”

Spoon – Black Like Me from “Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga”

Thanks for listening and I’ll see you next week.

Well, it was bound to happen. I couldn’t find enough new music this week for an entire show, so you’re getting a house cleaning sort of episode. That’s not to say that this music is bad, but it just never quite fit in previous shows when I got the tracks, so they just sat around until I had forgotten about them. There are a couple of great new tracks (from The Roots and Blonde Redhead) but the rest is older odds & ends that I hope you’ll enjoy.

Here’s what you’re listening to on this fine Canada Day:

The Roots featuring Jim James – Dear God 2.0

Luxury – Goody Two Shoes from “Cut & Paste Collective”
Thrice – Eleanor Rigby from “If We Could Only See Us Now”
Joy Electric – I’m OK, You’re OK from “Children Of The Lord” single
Me First & The Gimme Gimmes – Mandy from “Have A Ball”

Blonde Redhead – Here Sometimes
TW Walsh – The Pitch from “The Soft Drugs In Moderation”
Pete Stewart – Bringing Me Down from “Under North Sky”

The Cure – Out Of This World (Paul Oakenfold remix) from “Join The Dots: B-Sides & Rarities”

Thanks for listening and I’ll see you next week.

Hurray for the World Cup! After a rough start, there have been some incredible matches with equally incredible finishes the last couple days and we haven’t even reached the knock out stage yet! I managed to find a couple more tribute songs to national teams to include this week. Salutes to the Americans and South Koreans appear this week and if you know of any songs celebrating any other nations, let me know what they are and I’ll try and include them next week. Here’s what you’re listening to this week:

MxPx – Linda Linda (Japanese) from “On The Cover II (Japanese Import)”

Weezer – Represent
Super Junior – Victory Korea
Library Voices – Party Like It’s 2010 from “Denim On Denim”

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart – Lost Saint from “Say No To Love”
Champion Leader – (There’s) Always Something There To Remind Me from “Bright Sides” (Download it here.)
Denison Witmer – Are You Lonely? from “Happy Birthday Denison” (Download it here.)
Teenage Fanclub – Sometimes I Don’t Need To Believe In Anything from “Shadows”

Explosions In The Sky – Six Days At The Bottom Of The Ocean from “The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place”

Oh man, oh my…
I’ve been away for a while. It’s good to be back, but this last month was a portent (heck yes) of things to come. It’s been a crazy time in my life with weekly trips to Toronto, moving, graduations, work, and a little something called the WORLD CUP! I’ve been getting a lot of work done, but also watching all the matches. And I couldn’t be happier.

Vuvuzelas, those horns a lot of fans are blowing, are causing quite a stir. They sound like a drone of angry bees and have been mocked, ridiculed and spat upon all over. Calls to ban them have been silenced and to that I say, fantastic. I don’t like the sound. It’s annoying and takes away from other crowd sounds I appreciate, like chanting, singing etc. However, they have been a tradition in South African Football for years and this isn’t a surprise to the FIFA team. Plus, if you listen long enough, you just get used to them! Tradition wins out and for that, hurrah!

But this is about music, and here is an awesome setlist. Enjoy…

</vuvuzela>

Sleigh Bells – Rill Rill – Treats

Stars – Dead Hearts – The Five Ghosts
Beach Fossils – Vacation – Youth
Wild Nothing – Drifter - Gemini
The Radio Dept. – Heaven’s On Fire – Clinging To A Scheme
Wild Moccasins – It’s Health & My Own – Skin Collision Past

Sufjan Stevens – He Woke Me Up Again – Seven Swans
Blitzen Trapper – Love and Hate – Destroyer of the Void
Maps & Atlases – Solid Ground – Solid Ground
The Tallest Man on Earth – Burden Of Tomorrow – The Wild Hunt
Devandra Banhart – This Is The Way – Rejoicing In The Hands

The Drums – Best Friend – The Drums
Here We Go Magic – Collector – Pigeons
Tapes ‘n Tapes – Cowbell - The Loon
Bombay Bicycle Club – How Are We – How Are We
Pete and the Pirates – Mr. Understanding – Little Death

I guess I need to apologize for all the talking in this week’s episode. Once the topic of the World Cup came up, I just kind of rambled. That said, it’s kind of understandable as it’s kind of taken over the planet for that last week. Even many Canadians, who have no interest in the sport at any other time, adopt a team (since their own hasn’t qualified in 24 years) and cheer for a country that belongs to their heritage or a team chosen at random. I deeply respect all of you that chose DPRK before their surprisingly strong showing again Brazil.

Anyways, if you know of some unofficial songs for the World Cup or for specific teams in the World Cup, let me know and I’ll see if I can fit them in. Here’s what’s on the show this week:

The Gaslight Anthem – American Slang from “American Slang”

Die Fraktion – Schwarz Rot Gold from “Mut im Bauch”
Sportfreunde Stiller – ‘54, ‘74, ‘90, 2010 from “You Have To Win Zweikampf”
Skatoons – Come On England (The World Cup’s Waiting For You) from “Pretty England – World Cup 2010″
GDSP – Come On England Score A Goal
The Choir – Midnight Sun from “Burning Like The Midnight Sun”
The 77’s – The Best I Had from “The 77’s” EP
Champion Leader – Bright Sides from “Bright Sides”
LCD Soundsystem – New York I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down from “Sound of Silver”
Thanks for listening and I’ll see you next week.

Usually I’ve got the playlist for the podcast sorted out by Monday night at the latest. However, this week was much tougher. I tried a number of combinations but didn’t get it just right until tonight. Songs had to be dropped because they wouldn’t fit and then new songs had to be found to take their place. As much as it might sound like it, I don’t just throw any 8-10 songs together each week. Each playlist is tried out and listened to until I feel happy with it. It isn’t always perfect but it usually works, at least it’s something that I want to listen to. Fortunately, things came together just in time, so I present to you, the playlist for the week.

Sleigh Bells – Tell ‘Em from “Treats

The Starting Line – I’m Real from “Punk Goes Pop”
Slick Shoes – Friday Nite (sic) from “Slick Shoes”
Calibretto – I’m Only Humanoid (Lost In Space) from “Mutinous Wonderflesh vs The Body Under The HEAD: A Tribute To Blaster The Rocketman”
Joey Ramone – What A Wonderful World from “Don’t Worry About Me”

The National – Lucky You from “Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers”
Library Voices – Drinking Games from “Demin on Demin”
She & Him – Fools Rush In
Stars – Fixed from “The Five Ghosts”

Orient Is His Name – Write Them On Your Hands, They Are The Right Words from “Hidden Mansions”

Thanks for listening and I’ll see you again next week.
