Normally, I’m not a fan of artists recording a song once, releasing it and then releasing it again on another album. It just seems lazy, especially if the track is one song that you remember. If it’s buried at the back of an album, or on an indie-release that no one hears, I can understand wanting to get it to a larger audience if you feel it’s a killer track. That’s not really the case with Life Before Aesthetics by Denison Witmer. He first released it on his album, Carry The Weight and used the song in promotional material, so it was heard. When it came time to record his next album, The Ones Who Wait, the song appeared again. This wasn’t such a big deal as the label that released the album right away disappeared and no one really heard this (bad for Denison, I guess). A few months ago, his good friend Sufjan Stevens came along and signed him to his label. Their first move together was to re-release the album, so once again this song was out there. I thought this would be the end of it, but Witmer released a digital EP this week, entitled The Ones Who Wait (Part 2). It includes a couple B-sides, his contribution to a tribute to Sufjan Stevens’ Seven Swans album and an acoustic version of the aforementioned Life Before Aesthetics. So in spite of all this preamble, enjoy.
