It’s been interesting to see the evolution of Daytrotter.com over the last few years. Since 2006, they’ve had bands come in and do live recordings of four or five tracks. From there, they’ll do a tiny little bit of post-production on it before posting it on their website. When they first started, they’d post one session a day with a free mp3 download. As they’ve become more popular they started to need a little bit of financial support to offset the massive amounts of bandwidth that they’ve needed. First off, they started charging for lossless versions of the sessions. Then to coincide with a large increase in number of bands they’re recording, they started a $2 a month subscription for the mp3s but then they also upped the amount of releases to 5 a day. They’ve also started a program where you can listen to an artist record live for an extra $2. Now I wouldn’t recommend that last one unless you’re a huge fan of a band but the $2 a month subscription is definitely worth it. It’s a great way to find new music and to give a quick listen to some of the band’s material if you’re not sure that you’ll like it. So head on over to Daytrotter.com and check them out.
