Dustin Kensrue. Teppei Teranishi. Eddie Breckenridge. Riley Breckenridge. By themselves, those names don’t mean much, but together, they’ve made up the band Thrice for nearly the last 15 years. Although I can’t say that I’ve been a fan of theirs during that entire run, at some point in the last 7 years, they became one of my favourites. My first introduction was hearing the song Stare At The Sun on the radio in Winnipeg. I’m not sure if it was played everywhere but the one station there FREQ, really liked it and played it a lot. I picked up the album The Artist And The Ambulance but quickly tossed it aside. I couldn’t seem to get past the screaming. A couple years later, I started reading a lot about how amazing their album Vhiessu was. Still, I didn’t give it much of a thought. Finally, I heard so much praise and hype for their Alchemy Index EPs that I had to give them another chance and for whatever reason, this time it stuck. I was drawn in by the concept, a singular project made up of 4 EPs, one devoted to each of the four elements. The musicianship had come a long way from what I remembered and the screaming was almost non-existent. When I sat down and poured over the lyrics, it sunk in even more. At this point, I was hooked. However, all good things must come to an end. Last night, I caught their farewell tour. No, this breakup wasn’t due to inner-band conflict, just people growing up. With young families it’s tough to tour and priorities change. Being together for almost 15 years is a feat in itself. They haven’t closed the door on reuniting in the future but for now, that’s it. So thanks to these four men for creating such sincere, intelligent music. You will be missed.
