MxPx has meant a lot to me musically over the years. Their Teenage Politics album changed my musical listening habits and opened me up to a world beyond super-cheezy Christian music that I had been living before. (Although I will still break out Petra’s Beyond Belief album and rock out every once in a while, there’s nothing wrong with that.) That particular album hasn’t aged all that well but the band followed it up with two great discs, Life In General and Slowly Going The Way Of The Buffalo. I even put together a full episode a year and a half ago giving a pretty comprehensive history of the band (http://silenttalkie.com/2010/08/12/stradio/jareds-podcast-episode-82/) After being together for almost 20 years, they played a couple farewell shows last year. It looked like the band was done. Tom Wisniewski and founding drummer Yuri Ruley announced that they had gotten real jobs and would no longer be doing any touring with MxPx. Since then, they’ve done a couple dates as a band but for the most part, singer/bassist Mike Herrera has brought friends along to tour with him, dubbing them “MxPx All-Stars”. Word came out towards the end of last year that they were working on another album. Mike was still doing most of the song writing but he managed to convince Tom and Yuri to play on the album. Given their state of flux, I was a little worried about what this album would sound like. The first single dropped this week, called Far Away and it’s pretty good. They’ve brought some great energy and it’s a great track to start this week’s episode off with. The new album is called Plans Within Plans and will be out April 3rd. Here’s what else you’re hearing today:

MxPx – Far Away from “Plans Within Plans”

The Coffin Caddies – Kids from “Psychobilly Goes Pop”
Retribution Gospel Choir – The Stone (Revolution!) from “The Revolution” (Download it here.)
Mike McCready & Star Anna – Keep On

Colin Munroe – The First Of My Life featuring Pusha T (Download it here.)
Chali 2Na – Step Yo Game Up
Trip Lee – I’m Good
Heath McNease – Thrift Store Jesus from “Thrift Store Jesus” (Download it here.)

06R – Air

Thanks for listening and I’ll see you next week.
