There was a time and not that long ago when I wouldn’t be dead listening to country music. Having grown up in the Canadian prairies, you’re surrounded by it. When the rodeo would come into town, they’d always have a few concerts and you could hear the artist pretty clearly on the far side of the town. I guess you can blame Wilco and alt-country for getting me started. From there it was only natural to make the leap given the number of decent alt-country acts in Toronto. What’s really surprised me though, is the adoption of country and Americana styles by people from the old world. Over the last year people was swooned to Mumford & Sons as they took Britain by storm with a banjo. The latest is First Aid Kit. How these two girls from Sweden got into country music, I don’t know. What’s really surprising to me is that they’re really big in Sweden as well. For some reason, I just can’t picture Swedes sitting around, chilling to love songs that name drop Emmylou Harris and Johnny Cash. But they are. That album hit #1 in Sweden. I’m happy for them as well as the album is pretty good. I only came across the name a couple weeks ago when I first heard them working with Bright Eyes to cover The White Stripes (included in episode #158). I picked up the album this week and I’ve really been digging it. Emmylou has been repeating in my head all week. I think it’s the harmonies but it really sticks. Anyways, I hope that you like the track this week.
