I’m a little late getting to Alexisonfire in the podcast. I remember them back when they were just kids playing screamo in a park with kids (as seen in the video for Counterparts and Number Them). I listened to them a little but never really got into them. There was a little too much screaming for me. I liked Dallas Green’s vocal contribution but it always seemed like too much of a contrast between his melodies and the screaming. With The Northern, they reached a great balance. Green’s melody works really well with the screaming here and really features the band at the top of their game. It’s a little too bad this was the band’s final album, with Green’s City and Colour project ultimately becoming so much more successful that he decided to leave the band behind.
