I’ve got a couple songs from some long awaited albums this week. When I was in high school, I picked up this album by a band called Driver Eight. (at the time, I had no idea it was a reference to an R.E.M. song) It had a great Smashing Pumpkins-like sound and I scratched that disc up considerably by spinning it continuously way back in 96/97. After that album, the principle songwriter kind of disappeared, at least for people like me that were outside of Southern California. There were rumours of him playing in a band called The National, but that didn’t really go anywhere. Then about 5 years ago, he kind of resurfaced. A myspace page was created for a band called Theft. He posted a couple demos and mentioned recording an album. After a couple of tours (even opening for Creed) and a couple spots in TV shows, the Theft disc is finally out. About half of the songs have been around the Internet for a couple years, with three of them coming off an EP that was released a few months ago, but it’s nice to finally have something in album form. I haven’t quite connected with it the way that I connected with the Driver Eight disc but I’m enjoying it so far. The other hotly anticipated track comes from Holler, Wild Rose! (The exclamation mark isn’t my adding, it’s in the band name) Their album Our Little Hymnal was one of my favourite discs of 2007. The lead singer has a cool voice and it mixed well with their sound which borrowed from genres like shoegaze and gospel. They’re back this week with a track called Firecracker Child. You’re hearing those two tracks and six more this week. Here’s the order:

Flogging Molly – Saints & Sinner from “Speed of Darkness”

Hit The Lights – More Than A Feeling from “Punk Goes Classic Rock”
Thrice – Anthology from “Major/Minor”
Theft – Collide from “The Hard Way”

Deleted Scenes – Bedbedbedbedbed
The Wilderness of Manitoba – Hermit
Holler, Wild Rose! – Firecracker Child

Bon Iver & James Blake – Fall Creek Boys Choir

Thanks for listening and I’ll see you next week.
