Hurray for long weekends! Certainly if there are some Americans reading this, they think I’m celebrating a little bit early, but with Canada Day falling on a Friday this year, I’m currently counting down the hours until I get to celebrate the anniversary of the enactment of the British North America Act which moved Canada from an overseas colony to a nation that was part of the Commonwealth. Although, I’m not going camping this weekend, the July long weekend is usually a great time to explore some of Canada’s vast area of nature set aside through the National and Provincial Park system. Despite Canada harvesting a lot of its natural resources, there are plenty of beautiful, protected areas where you can go and relive the days before indoor plumbing. The National Parks Project, sponsored by FilmCAN, Rogers, and a bunch of other people (There’s one last Oxford Comma for you before it officially disappears) took a bunch of filmmakers and musicians to various parks across Canada. The results are pretty remarkable in both film and music. I’d really encourage you to check it out. The list of musicians featured include John K. Samson of The Weakerthans, Shad, members of The Besnard Lakes, Sandro Perri and more. I managed to squeeze one track from there in the episode this week. Here’s what else you’re hearing:
Cut Off Your Hands – Happy As Can Be from “Happy As Can Be” (Download it here.)
Nico Case & Nick Cave – She’s Not There (Download it here.)
Handsome Furs – Bury Me Standing from “Sound Kaptial”
Ben Folds – Such Great Heights
Danielson – Wheel In The Sky from “Grow Up” 7″
Scott Silletta – Time Remains The Same from “The Life and Times of…” (Download it here.)
The Civil Wars – Tip of My Tongue from “Live at Eddie’s Attic” (Download it here.)
Denison Witmer – 24 Turned 25 from “Philadelphia Songs”
Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas of Besnard Lakes and Shad – Alluvial Fan from “National Parks Project – Nahanni”
Thanks for listening and I’ll see you next week.
