It’s kind of amazing what effect the weather has on music listening habits. As you get into the fall, the musical themes tend to get a little darker, the music starts to slow down a little and then as I get into winter, I start listening to a lot more post-rock. Now as it’s getting warmer, I’ve been noticing I’ve been tuning into things that are brighter, poppier, catchier. I know that I’m not the only one that feels this way. Just look at the unofficial songs of summer that seem to pop up every year. Once it gets warm outside, people’s mood improves and that seems to be exemplified in their musical choices. This doesn’t cover everything in this week’s episode, but over the next few weeks, you’ll probably notice a bit of a shift in the content of the podcast. I think the lead track by Matt Pond PA is perfect example of a spring song. It’s light and hopeful but not quite poppy enough to be a summer song. Here’s what’s on the playlist this week:
Matt Pond PA – Lovers Always Win from “Spring Fools”
Lifesavers – Huntington Beach Police from “Huntington Beach”
The Ataris – San Dimas High School Football Rules from “Blue Skies, Broken Hearts… Next 12 Exits”
Me First & The Gimme Gimmies – All Out Of Love from “Go Down Under”
The National – Ashamed of the Story I Told from “Ciao My Shining Star: The Songs of Mark Mulcahy”
The Watson Twins – Ain’t No Sunshine from “Night Covers”
They Might Be Giants – Can’t Keep Johnny Down
Bruce Peninsula – Itty Bitty Baby/Moon at Your Back from “Daytrotter.com Sessions” (Download it here.)
Clouds Echo In Blue – Where Did Winter Go from “Clouds Echo In Blue”
Thanks for listening and I’ll see you next week.
