After last week’s patriotic song, I come back with another Winter Olympic sport-themed song. Although this time it’s the Weakerthans with their story about a guy getting drunk at a curling club pondering life. The track was recorded at a sweet venue in their hometown of Winnipeg, which I remember as the Walker Theatre. However, a few years ago it was named for the second most famous singer from the city (Neil Young counts as #1), namely Burton Cummings.
We’ve also got some brand new music from The New Pornographers and Broken Social Scene. Both are great tracks that have me counting down until both of those albums come out. There’s also a live version of Vampire Weekend covering a Rancid track that is some kind of awesome.
The Damien Jurado track at the end comes from something called Laminar Excursion Monthly. A couple small, mid-Western US labels (Crossroads of America Records and Flannelgraph Records, if you don’t know what a flannelgraph is, look it up) are releasing two EPs a month on mini-CD’s (when was the last time you saw one of those?) and they started it off with Damien Jurado. It’s a cool idea and pretty cheap. I’m just really looking forward to later in the year when they release the highly anticipated Blaster The Rocketman disc. It’ll be awesome. The Playlist:
BTK – Peppyrock from “Birth Through Knowledge”
The New Pronographers – Your Hands (Together) from “Together” (Download it here.)
Constantines – Million Star Hotel from Daytrotter.com sessions (Download it here.)
PS I Love You – Facelove from “Diamond Rings/PS I Love You 7″” (Download it here.)
