Normally, given my love of multiples of 10 and of 5, I’d be celebrating the fact that I made it to 50 weeks of consecutive music. But with it being only two weeks until I’ve completed a full year of bringing you my favourite music and you not complaining too much about it, I thought I’d hold off, at least for a week before pulling a Barry Horowitz and patting myself on the back excessively. I also considered another seasonal theme but then realized that you probably don’t want to hear 20 different versions of Auld Lang Syne. Sadly, the song really doesn’t hold up well when you hear it in quick succession like that (unlike Tyrone’s podcast of Billie Jean which is awesome) and I’m too lazy to build a themed one that starts with reflection and introspection and ends with anticipation. Actually, that sounds like a lot of fun and if I wasn’t preparing this two weeks in advance, I might actually undertake that. I’m hoping this is my last episode to lack narration as I’m hoping that I’ve had time to pick up a decent mic over my two weeks of holidays but I’m not going to guarantee that. Here’s what you get to listen to this week:

Muse – House of the Rising Sun from “War Child 10″

Apparently, they’re the best live band on the planet. I’ve been meaning to take in a show of theirs but haven’t gotten around to it, so I guess I know them best from their contributions to the Guitar Hero games. Still noteworthy but if their reputation is deserved, I’m really missing out and so are you.

Maylene & The Sons Of Disaster – Listen Close from “III”

Given my distaste of screamo, I would’ve thought that this album would’ve faded a lot from my consciousness as the year went on, but it’s just too good. While not album of the year quality, it’s still awesome.

Stryper – Peace Of Mind

It would’ve been a little odd to see Boston play with Michael Sweet singing but since he was the bands touring singer for a while, it’s happened. Stryper didn’t make too many changes to the song but it still sounds very Stryper. This song goes out to my old roommate Rob who loved Boston’s first album and would spin it fairly frequently while studying.

Woodhands – Electric Avenue from “Seven Year Itch – Paper Bag Records Compilation” (Download it here.)

Smashing Pumpkins – A Song For A Son from “Teargarden by Kaleidyscope”

A new Pumpkins song that doesn’t completely suck? I know you’re as shocked as I am.

Paper Lions – Everything You’ve Done Wrong from “Take It In: A Tribute To Sloan”

A band from PEI covering a band from Nova Scotia. One of the few bands on the tribute album that I’d heard of (I saw them open for The Watchmen a few months ago) and they do a pretty good job. Sadly, the rest of the comp really isn’t that great.

And Then There Were None – Hide And Seek (Download it here.)

Yes, that’s an Imogen Heap cover. I’ll leave it at that.

The Ghost Is Dancing – Louis Riel

Easily the best song about a man that lead a rebellion, was hung as a traitor, only to be exonerated recently. It’s amazing what killing a couple surveyors can do to your popularity.

Danielson – Moment Soakers

I know we’ve both been looking forward anxiously until we’d hear new music from everyone’s favourite weird New Jersey musical family. Ok, maybe it’s just me. That said, this song is a lot more accessible than all of his earlier material.

MxPx – Auld Lang Syne from “Punk Rawk Christmas” (Download it here.)

Despite what I said about Auld Lang Syne, you still deserve to hear one version of it before you head off to your New Years Party and hear everyone around trying to stumble through it while extremely intoxicated, even though no one knows to the words of it when they’re completely sober.

Thanks for spending the year with SilentTalkie Radio. Happy New Year.

Jared

One response so far, want to say something?

  1. Rob says:

Thanks a lot for that! I totally laughed out loud at that first “Yeah”.

And wow. I think that is the first Sloan cover I’ve ever heard.
