Growing up, I was pretty close to my brothers. We all lived out on a farm and there was no neighbours for a full mile. As a result of this isolation, we spent quite a bit of time together. In some ways, that bond has faded a little over time since I’ve moved halfway across the country, but when I’m home, we seem to pick things up again like we haven’t missed a beat. I’m headed home tomorrow for a nice fall vacation that’s primarily to attend the wedding of my oldest brother. Dan and I shared a room together until our early teens, spent quite a bit of time hanging out after that and even shared an apartment for a couple years before I left for Toronto. As a result, we listened to a lot of the same music and I think that we’ve influenced each other’s tastes quite a bit over the years. So, I’d like to take the next hour and a bit to bring you back to a simpler time, long before the Internet cheapened music and made it disposable. Back to a time when an album was purchased and carefully deciphered from all angles. Liner notes were poured over until you had memorized, not only the lyrics but knew the names of the production team and most of the people that were thanked.
Now, despite the fact that I now pimp a lot of cool, indie music, that wasn’t where my tastes always lied. Due to forces outside my control, the music of my youth was pretty much limited to what you could find in a Christian Bookstore. This doesn’t mean it was all bad but there are some skeletons that are being brought out of the closet for today’s episode. I spent quite a bit of time narrating the podcast today, so I’ll let that do that talking. I explained the significance of many of the tracks and hopefully you can appreciate it, despite not having gone through the exact journey that Dan and I did. Onto the playlist:
