Welcome back! This week’s podcast is a little more on the experimental/rock side of things this week, beginning with another track of Vic Chesnutt’s new record off Constellation, which features members of Godspeed backing him up… over the course of the record you can really hear the influence, especially when the dynamics kick in full force. There’s also a couple interesting live tracks here, one from Final Fantasy, taken from a performance earlier this summer, and I believe it’s going to be the first track from his new record “Heartland.”
There’s also a new (yes! new!) song recorded at Daytrotter by Rural Alberta Advantage. I was browsing the old Wavelength site the other day, and somehow it totally slipped my mind that I interviewed those guys for the mag way back… I remember seeing them at a Pitter Patter night when the White Orchid was still a legit karaoke bar, and it was amazing. I’m still surprised by how little they’ve changed.
Near the end of the mix I’ve tossed in a track from Andrew WK’s new album, “55 Cadillac,” a more-or-less solo piano record. I’ve got tickets to see him here in Toronto in the Annex, and apparently he’s going to improvise a piano set with a string quartet, and that should be amazing. People shouldn’t be surprised by his piano prowess… even in the video for “Party Hard” there are cuts of him banging away on a grand piano. When I saw him at Sneaky Dee’s with “To Live and Shave In LA,” he also rocked the house with his piano skills (it was actually the only redeeming quality about TLASILA that night). And I finished the podcast off with a cover by Dave Bazan that I’m certain he did because I told him about how awesome that song (and the whole Big Lebowski soundtrack) was back when he was in Toronto during a solo tour. Yeah, pretty certain. Enjoy!
