It’s amazing what music can do to you. You can hear a song and not really be affected by it, it’ll slide by without much through and impression and recollection of that track is nearly impossible as soon as it’s over. Then, you can revisit the same song a couple years later and suddenly it’s greatness hits you and you can’t deny how awesome it is. As I was searching for an appropriate closing track for this week, I experienced just that. I picked up this tribute album to The Prayer Chain. They were one of my favourite bands during my adolescence and I was looking forward to the re-imagining of their songs. I was pretty disappointed originally. The only track that stood out to me was a cover of the song, Fifty-Eight. Now that song was named that way because it was written in 5/8 time, essentially, 5 beats per bar, instead of the typical 4 beats per bar that most rock uses. The band on this tribute album (I can’t remember the name off hand and don’t feel like looking it up) tries to play the song as is using 4 beats per minute without adapting the song. The resulting mix is just horrid and sounds awkward. Needless to say, the awfulness of this track really prevented me from fully exploring this album. And this thought brings me back to last night. As I was searching for a lengthy track to finish off this episode, I saw Luxury’s cover of Sun Stoned from that same accursed tribute CD. Since I had contemplated using the original, I decided to give a shot. Well, I spent the next 45 minutes listening to that track on repeat. This track hit me and hit me hard. I picked up my headphones, plugged them in and cranked it. I let the music surround and envelop me and gave me this euphoric feeling complete with chills down my spine. Now you may not feel this way upon hearing the track. I doubt that I’ll experience the same feelings when hearing the song in a day or two, but for half an hour last night, I was on top of the world. Have you ever had any songs affect you like that?
