Sorry about this being late, I completely forgot to get this together last night, so I was scrambling this morning trying to finish it off. Thankfully, I had the playlist set a couple days ago, so it didn’t take quite so much time. Today, I’m continuing in my series recapping the story of certain artists. For being a fairly boring live band with very little following, Starflyer 59 has a long history and has released a lot of music over the last 15 years with some of it very tough to track down, unless you really like paying $150 for a 7″ record. Anyways, this is part 1 of the Starflyer story. We’re covering their first four albums with a nice bonus track thrown in at the end. I haven’t always been a fan of the band. My older brother used to listen to their Gold album a fair bit when we were in high school but I could never get into it. Shoegaze wasn’t my thing. I just found it boring and dull. I’m not sure when it changed, but I think it was around Everyone Makes Mistakes that I started to get into their sound. Of course by then, they had left most of the elements of shoegaze behind but slowly as I stated to work my way through their back catalog, I suddenly began to really enjoy it and if you look at my last.fm profile, you’d notice that they have the second most spins of any band on there, and that’s just tracking the last couple years. So anyways, I hope you enjoy this and stay tuned for Part 2 next week. Now onto the playlist:

Blue Collar Love from “Silver”

She’s The Queen from “She’s The Queen EP”
You’re Mean from “Gold”
One Shot Juanita from “Gold”

A Hosuewife Love Song (live) from “Plugged”
The Translator from “Americana”

I Drive A Lot from “The Fashion Focus”
Fell In Love At 22 from “The Fashion Focus”

Broken Hearts Don’t Stop – Enemy Ships

Thanks for listening and we’ll see you next week.

Jared

My feelings about SF59 are about the opposite of that. I love the early stuff and I feel like they peaked on The Fashion Focus. The new stuff is still good too, but sometimes I just gotta listen to the Gold album.

Fun bit of Trivia: On the first printing of the Silver album they misspelled the band name on the CD: Starflier 59. That always made me laugh.

I was listening to some Rose Blossom Punch the other day. Anyway you can come up with a Aaron Sprinkle/Aaron Sprinkle produced show?

  3. Jared says:

Aaron Sprinkle could definitely be a future episode. Poor Old Lu, Rose Blossom Punch, his solo stuff and Fair is definitely enough material for a show.

Not sure I could start using stuff he produced as that list is ridiculously long and full of great albums.
