Welcome to my second artist overview. I liked doing the first one so much (The Appleseed Cast), I thought I’d do it for an artist who released an album this week that I’ve really been enjoying. I didn’t start listening to Sunny Day Real Estate until well after they broke up but I always kind of wondered who that Jeremy Enigk guy that was on the Poor Old Lu EP I purchased as a teenager. He had a really unique voice that could soar and bring power with it when he let loose. Once I finally got around to listening to Diary, it took a few listens before it really sunk in. I listened to a couple tracks when The Rising Tide came out in 2002 but nothing really struck me as brilliant. Then once The Fire Theft album came out, I finally put in the effort to really listening to it and Sunny Day Real Estate and developed an appreciation for Mr. Enigk’s voice. From here, I watched as he’s released 3 more solo albums and appeared on a couple others that I’ve picked up. Anyways, OK Bear was released this week and I think it’ll be one of my top albums of the year. Here’s the setlist:

Sunny Day Real Estate:
Pillars from “How It Feels To Be Something On”

Song About an Angel from “Diary”
Every Shining Time You Arrive from “How It Feels To Be Something On”
One from “The Rising Tide”

Solo albums:
Return of the Frog Queen from “Return of the Frog Queen”
Cannons from “World Waits”
Oh, John from “The Missing Link”
Just A State Of Mind from “OK Bear”

The Fire Theft:
Heaven from “The Fire Theft”

Other:
O, Procupine – mewithoutYou from “Brother, Sister”

Digging Deep – Poor Old Lu from “Straight Six”

Thanks for listening. Hope you enjoy it.

Jared

One response so far, want to say something?

I may be remembering it wrong, but I believe Jeremy Enigk actually went to the same high school as Damien Jurado and Dave Bazan… kind of a strange trifecta of christian indie-emo-folk thing, possibly related to Mars Hill.
