I don’t know what it is but I’ve got a thing for pre-1995 hip-hop. Some it was popular, some of it wasn’t. Some of it was great, some was really bad, but at the same time really good. Hopefully you’ll understand what I mean as you go through this week’s episode. Thanks to Rob’s request of The Message by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, I thought I’d throw an old school mix together with you. I tried to keep it away from most of the obvious songs that have been recycled on countless comps already, but a couple really well known songs managed to slip in there. Anyways, without further ado, here’s the tracklist:
Maestro Fresh Wes – Let Your Backbone Slide (Power Mix) from “Symphony In Effect”
Dream Warriors – My Definition of a Bombastic Jazz Style from “… And Now The Legacy Begins”
S.F.C. – Music Is My Life from “Phase III”
Kish – I Rhyme The World In 80 Days from “Order From Chaos” (it took me 10 minutes to find this album title and not one of the comps that it’s on)
De La Soul – Oodles Of O’s from “De La Soul Is Dead”
Public Enemy – Welcome To The Terrordome from “Fear Of A Black Planet”
Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five – The Message from “The Message”
The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy – Television, The Drug of a Nation from “Hypocrisy is the Greatest Luxury”
Bell Biv DeVoe – Above The Rim from “Hootie Mack”
Shaquille O’Neal – Shoot, Pass, Slam from “Diesel”
T-Bone – Madd Skillz from “Tha Life Of A Hoodlum”
Big Daddy Kane – I Get The Job Done from “It’s A Big Daddy Thing”
Eric B. & Rakim – Paid In Full (Seven Minutes Of Madness mix) from “Paid In Full” single
There you go, hope you enjoy it.
Jared

Rob says:
well done! I think you walked the line of keeping it familiar without playing the overdone stuff perfectly. Totally dug Kish – “Next stop is the motherland – Yo Kish is it Africa? No, Japan”!
