Welcome back listeners. This week we get back into the swing of things after last week’s special “tribute” episode. And like I promised last week, I will play the new single from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Oh and lucky me, it’s Friday the 13th, AGAIN. This will be the only ackowledgement of that date for now. Anyways, there’s a lot of new music in this podcast, and strangely another high concentration of Toronto-centric musicians. I’m not being intentional about that, it just happens that way… (mind you, if thex.ca plays some more “Silver Speakers” on the air, I’ll have to pay a little closer attention to what’s going on out there in British Columbia!). Anyways, hope you enjoy the mix!
1. “How We Exit” by Gentlemen Reg from “Jet Black”
I can’t say enough about how I love this song. It will be on every “On the Go” playlist I make for the rest of the year, guaranteed. I can’t say I’ve ever really been into Gentlemen Reg before, but this song makes we want to go back and re-evaluate some of his previous records. I also have to note that I see this guy all the time in town, usually at the Dark Horse cafe or at Sneakys. We must inhabit very similar life patterns.
I don’t have a lot to say about this one, but I like it. They’re on the “Joyful Noise” recording label.
3. “My Wife, Lost in the Wild” by Beirut from “Realpeople Holland”
At first I decided that I liked the “electronic” stuff from Beirut’s new double EP better than the Mexican-Orchestra stuff (which is why this song is included here), but the horn-heavy material is growing on me. Look out for a cut or two in the following weeks.
4. “Independence is no Solution” by The Blankket from “Pegatively Nositive”
From the sounds of this new album, Steve from the Blankket is returning to some familiar “Ninja High School” like sounds, and has a somewhat pissed-off attitude to go with it. Note the “hipster” calling-out in this track alone!
5. “Zero” by Yeah Yeah Yeahs from “It’s Bliss”
Sure, like everyone else, I too miss the drums and guitar sound of the YYYs, but I do recognize that they do have to do something different, and I’m glad with where they’re headed.
6. “Bras d’Or Lakes” by the Hylozoists from “L’Ile De Sept Villes”
A welcome return by this instrumental group.
7. “Spider” by Swan Lake from “Enemy Mine”
I’m not totally sold on this new record by Swan Lake yet, but I’m getting there.
8. “Strange Fits” by the Darcys from “Endless Waters”
These guys are amazing, and I can’t recommend checking them out highly enough. After discovering this track, I really need to get the whole album, but it’s hard to find.
9. “Pulling on a Line” by the Great Lake Swimmers from “Lost Channels”
Another great track by the GLS. I felt like it would fit into this part of the set really well.
10. “Last Train to Leamington” by Graven from “From Mountainview to Canyon Heart”
Don’t forget to download Graven’s acoustic record, “From Mountainview to Canyon Heart,” here on GravenRecords.com. Keep an eye out for Matt and his crew of rockers for some future Graven tour dates, coming to a town near you!
11. “Scout Leader” by Brian Borcherdt from “Coyotes”
Taking a break from his electro-freak outs with Holy Fuck, Borcherdt here keeps things nice and simple.
12. “Untitled” by Muskox from “Gallantries”
Another great instrumental group from Toronto… if I was going to describe it to you like you’d never heard it before, the simplest way I’d put it, is it’s like Sufjan Stevens, but without the precious singing and prog-musical obsession. Muskox make complicated music that appears simple, weaving dramatic and lush soundscapes with a relaxed tempo.
13. “Tunnelvision” by Here We Go Magic from “Here We Go Magic”
I first gave this a listen because the name alone was awesome. A valuable lesson was learned here.
