Mistakenly called the podcast “number two” in the audio commentary. (Technically, this IS the second podcast under the name “Put Your Heart Into It,” so there). Anyways, I feel like these are starting to come together… hopefully you like the “random” nature of these podcasts, but I’m toying with the idea of doing a few “theme” weeks.  I really enjoy making these, so come with me on the journey, won’t you?

1. “Blood” by The Middle East from “The Recordings of the Middle East”

One of the reasons I love year-end lists is that beyond the same 10  records that everyone seems to list (like in 2008, everyone put “Dear  Science” on top. Big deal right? What does that say about your list?),  it’s the ones that I’ve never heard of that grabs my attention. For  me, that band was the Middle East, which I kept coming across on various lists online. Basically this band is an interesting combination of everyone’s “favourite” artists. In a song like “blood” they combine Sufjan, Arcade Fire, and countless more.

2. “All Fires” by Swan Lake from “Beast Moans”

This is a great record to listen all the way through, but to pick one song to play for you here, I have to go with “the single.” Burning the light to live — an interesting thought.

3. “Kids” by MGMT from “Oracular Spectacular”

I have to admit that I didn’t love this album at first, and despite giving it a few listens, I really had to hear it out of context to really appreciate the songs themselves. I still wouldn’t sit down and put this on the turntable, but I wouldn’t shut it off if it came on the radio. Whatever that is.

4. “I Tried” by Mon-O-Phone

This was an interesting find from the now-defunct weblog “Bolachas Gratis,” which both leaked buzz albums and share music well off the beaten path. When my album was posted there (“Streetlights and Stars”) it lead to almost a thousand downloads and killed my bandwidth
instantly.

5. “Epilepsy is Dancing” by Anthony and the Johnsons from “The Crying Light”

At the end of this song, “Antony” perfectly executes my favourite trick of his, where his voice layers into multiple voices, and they start going off like a sad chorus.

6. “The Butcher” by Final Fantasy from “Spectrum 14th Century”

Whole Owen Pallet is lauded for his arraingment skills, I equally love this Torontonian’s songwriting, specifically the way he twists lyrics and incorporates modern Internet slang. Here he drops “all your base are belong to us” effortlessly.

7. “Steam Roller” by Bruce Peninsula from “A Mountain is a Mouth”

After getting a recommendation from Frank @ chromewaves.net to check out this band (Frank promoting a local band on his wickedly famous blog? Unheard of. But I kid.). I’m so glad I did, not only does this Toronto mega-band feature some gruff vocals and a heavy drum backline, but Katie Stelmanis is one of the backing vocalists in the group.

8. “Sheets” by Damien Jurado from “Caught in the Trees”

I’ve been a fan of Damien Jurado for a long time (nerd out — I have his Sub Pop “Trampoline” 7 inch), and man, he’s come a long way since then. His new album is his most vital in years, and yeah, sadder than ever.

9. “In the Drugs” by Low from “Trust”

As I’ve noted in the podcast, this is probably my favourite “Low” song. Maybe 2nd after “Murder” (the “Murder” 10inch version). Everything is awesome; the dynamics, the lyrics involving Marvin Gaye, the harmonies. Every flavour of emotion is in there.

I feel the same way about MGMT’s Oracular Spectacular. Like some of the songs on their own but still don’t feel like sitting down and listening to the whole album.

  2. tyrone says:

Yeah… that album is going to live on mixtapes for a very, very long time.
